Bonfire and Meridian
Owner: KCMO Parks & Rec
Artist: Deborah Butterfield
Dates: December 1995
Medium: Bronze
Description:
AKA Meridian and Bonfire
There is more than meets the eye with Deborah Butterfield's horse sculptures. At first glance, Bonfire (the reclining horse) looks to be made of driftwood while Meridian (the standing horse) looks to be made of curving vines. However, upon closer inspection, it is discovered that both horses are actually made of bronze and have been masterfully disguised to replicate their original organic forms.
In addition, an emotional interplay exists between these two life-size horses that have been placed together in close proximity to the living creatures around them.
These sculptures are located within the Kansas City Zoo. They can be found near the playground in the Kid Zone area of the Zoo, north of the Helzberg Penguin Plaza and the carousel.
