Police Monument I

Medium: Bronze, Vermont granite

Description:

This 12-foot tall granite stele sits in the grassy area outside of the Kansas City Police Department at the corner of E 12th Street and Locust Street facing west. It features a bronze medallion of a bust of a policeman in full uniform (circa 1908) facing to his right. Below the medallion are carved the names of eleven police officers who died during the line of duty between December 30, 1881 and December 10, 1908.

This monument was dedicated at its original location at the Old Kansas City City Hall at 5th Street and Main. In 1935, it was relocated to The Paseo between Admiral Boulevard and Independence Avenue. In February 1983, it was moved to its current location in front of the Kansas City Police Department and across the street from the current City Hall.
