Description:
The sculpture is a fountain in the abstract form of a hand holding a cup. Water flows from the cup into a square pool below. The fingers of the hand and the cup are made of painted steel. The cup is shaped like a folded paper cup; wider at the top and pointed at the base. Water is pumped into a shallow basin at the top and pours out of one corner into a concrete pool below. The pool is 2 feet deep and 8 feet square.
"Quenching Cup" is one of three pieces in the series in this building. The other two are "Offering Hat" and "Illuminating Boat." The artist wanted to emphasize the healing properties of water, light and plant-life in these works. The stylized origami-inspired forms blend art and the environment.
These three pieces are part of the City of Kansas City's One Percent for the Arts Program.
